Books that have made me come close are Anne Frank's Diary, To Kill A Mockingbird, and several non-fiction accounts of Medieval surgery, The Plague, The Holocaust, vivisection, and so on. The only book that ever REALLY brought me to tears described Schizoid Personality Disorder (which I have) accurately and with a bit of compassion. It was pretty cathartic, actually.

Yeah, when I was 7 or 8. Read a story where the writer had to leave the pet dog behind because the author and his family were leaving the town. That dog dies 2 days later outside their old home. It was very touching at that time.
-
Yes, recently. I read the Helen Forrester Omnibus, which includes her books Twopence to Cross the Mersey Liverpool Miss By The Waters Of Liverpool and Lime Street At Two. Though she changed her name and the names of her family, this is the author's own early life, beginning when her father went bankrupt and dragged them back to his own hometown, Liverpool (UK0 to find work. The hardships these children went through just before and during WW2 were as bad as anything in AFrica today, and all the more appalling because the parents really did nothing to get them out of it. In fact, Helen became the housekeeper and mother to the children while mother and father went to work, and squandered money on themselves. Helen was used and abused, before she finally fought back and wanted a life for herself. You have to read this. It is heartbreaking to think that this is just a generation ago in a developed country like England. I was irate with the parents and their neglect of their children, and their expectation that Helen should give up her education at the age of 11 to care for the younger ones.

The only time I've become really emotional when reading a book was when I read a book called 'Rena's Promise'. It's a true story about two sisters who survived Auschwitz. Some of the scenes they paint in the book are very distressing and the sense of sisterhood really touched me.

Definitely! Harry Potter did it to me repeatedly. The Lord of the Rings made me cry for many reasons. Most recently, The Memory Keepers Daughter did it to me several times. I'm reading Little House on the Prairie to my daughter right now. It never made me cry as a kid, but as an adult, I understand so much more that it has made me cry several times. They faced so much that I sometimes don't know how they kept going.
