  • No. A bolt to break the skull and brain would be a pretty fast and humane way to go. I've heard about bad treatment overseas whereby the cow's leg tendons are cut while they are alive, and that's just wrong. Torture and cruelty toward animals is sickening. If they're to be used for food or leather, kill them first.
  • i dont know why ppl gave u thumbs down on ur question. yes im disgusted. no animal should be tortured it should be a quick death.
  • I will be honest I have neva really thought about how the beef gets to my plate, maybe I should, maybe I shouldnt
  • Yes, but I'm sure the large, passive, grass-eating animals must have done *Something* to deserve it. That just leaves the question of veal...
  • yeah maybe cruel but we have to eat and I aint living on veggies! LOL
  • Yes, but I try not to think about it while I am eating a nice steak. It is hard for me to eat meat, I was a vegatarian for over 10 years. Then my husband turned me on to filet, i'm hooked.
  • With the nearly revealed video-Yes. Watching that cow being moved with the forklift nearly make me puke.
  • They can be fairly appallingly run. Not all of them are humane as they should be but when we can't even treat other human beings properly what chance have the animals got?
  • I think about it at times, and don't think the majority are mistreated, unless you count the actual killing. The videos that were just shown on the news were at a slaughterhouse with sick cows that should NEVER have been in the food-chain, and that slaughterhouse was castigated and shut down for the inhumane treatment.
  • I'm disgusted by the entire 'corporate' farming empire. There is nothing positive about it. I am conscious of where my food comes from. If I do choose meat, which is rare, it comes from a local free-range farm where the animal lives a happy life until humanely slaughtered. I don't drink milk from those abused milk cows, either. I realize that many people don't, and won't, care. The workers at these slaughter houses are also unfairly treated much of the time.
  • I'm quite sure the men are treated equally bad. LOL
  • No, cows are food.
  • Yes. That's why I don't eat them. You know, other than the fact that MEAT IS VERY VERY BAD FOR YOU, and we have no right to go around enslaving and murdering for no good reason.
  • I saw video on the news and am absolutely appalled that one can treat another being with that kind of cruely. It's one thing to raise animals for food but its quite another to mistreat them to that extent. What a shame.
  • Yes I am, I think we should at least find them a suitable mate before we chop off their heads and put them on our barbeques.
  • That's why I'm a vegetarian!
  • It was on the news yesterday and today. Some cows were being slaugthered and beat to death. The way they were treated was horrible. And this cow meat was going to public schools! Proof: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,327915,00.html
  • that is a lot of the reason why I don't eat meat.
  • Disgusted as I am delighted by the delicious beef that ensues. [edit] IN LIGHT OF DR'S Any returning trolls who have so graced my answer with negative ratings, I beg you to read the sentence twice and look at the meaning behind 2 things. 1. The answer itself 2. The question posed (1) The answer is exactly what the question asked for, an opinion. I would presume that you find this opinion offensive beacuse you think that my love for beef outweighs the cruelty being done to theese animals. My answer is twofold, and I will go out on a limb and call myself clever the first part of the answer blatantly says that my love for beef is equal to my disaproval of how the animals are treated. The second part being more open for interpratation but as intended was supposed to insinuate that where I stand as a person I can do nothing about this issue. I am fed, for the most part at the place I work (burger king) and the campus cafeteria. I have no choice but to eat the beef if I want meat, I cannot go buy the expensive organic stuff and if I could I would be unable to afford it. In general the animals that we eat get treated poorly, there is nothing I can do about that right now. If I dont eat beef beacuse the cows are treated poorly, then I shant eat anything at all we treat food like trash. (2) The question asked most literally from my point of veiw reads. Johnny dont you find it disgusting that cows are treated with cruelty in slaughter houses? If you read the question as I did you will find my answer void of offense. However if you insist on simply giving me a DR, would you at least show the small amount of kindness to step up and tell me why?
  • Not only that, I am against killing of any living being for any reason, food or otherwise. I am a born vegetarian. Every creation has a space to live in this world. Cow is the most innocent animal and she is like mother to us.
  • Sadly, the slaughterhouse that caused the recall of 143 million pounds of beef is right here in southern California...yes, it is unconscionable..but I have also seen similar pictures of chickens crammed together in small coops barely able to move...and I suspect that there are other unscrupulous places that house other animals used for food that are also inhumanely treated. :(
  • No but i'm totally disgusted how human embryos are treated in abortion slaughter houses though.
  • No, because they get to watch moovies all day.lol
  • I'm not only disgusted about how animals are treated but I am more disgusted about how humans are treated. The killing of whales is unacceptable. The mistreatment of cows is unacceptable. the mistreatment or lack of correct treatment of dogs and cats is unacceptable. Dog fighting and horse fighting, cock fights are all unacceptable. But what is really unacceptable is the torture of human beings, killing of innocent people with IEDs and by people blowing themselves up. War is unacceptable.
  • Maybe we should call them "Feed America" houses.
  • this is a comment, sorry............:( @ Ec-nal You find it amusing ? I am not sure what you're getting at! This has nothing to do with the subject but are you saying Bush and the USA are STOPPING the killing in Iraq? Do you have any idea of the number of civilians that ARE dying in Iraq, not to mention all the soldiers that are dying? So what slaughter is being stopped? As for your reference to living in a free country. How does that justify your contempt towards animals that have to die to provide humans with food? Neither does it explain your total lack of compassion towards those tortured cows on that hideous video! Granted, we have a choice whether or not to eat meat and I would never wish to deny that but your display of desensitization I find simply revolting.
  • Yes, as well as how chickens, pigs, and every other creature is treated. I'm amazed that the truly disgusting ways people treat "lower" animals.
  • Yes, I think it's very sad. I believe that it's perfectly natural for human beings to eat meat, but that the whole system is horribly corrupt because of mass production. I'd be tempted to raise my own meat animals when I have my own property, but...knowing me, I'd grow attached and they'd live to the end of their days on my farm, lol. They need to change things. I don't believe we should *have* to feel guilty for eating meat, but at this point we do. After all, carnivorous animals eat meat, guilt-free, all the time. Such is life. Such is nature. Things need to change in slaughterhouses.
  • Very. Then again, I don't eat cows. People are cruel to each other and their animal cousins because a life without cruelty is a life without opposites, and a life without opposites does hell to a mind that doesn't understand how feminist thought liberates you from antonymic restrictions.
  • yes that was one of the reasons i became a vegetarian
  • No. My reasons for this are as follows - Humans by nature are meat-eaters. We have meat-ripping teeth at the front, our eyes face forward like a predator, not like prey which have eyes near the sides of their head, i.e. deer, cow, etc... Its nasty but its a fact of life that their will always be a demand for meat, its just the way we get our meat which seems barbaric, but its no more barbaric than chasing an animal with a spear and eventually making a kill. But, to answer your question - You have to realise animals, for want of a better word, are dumb... There is no benefit of making their last days comfy! They are bred to eat. They get fed, watered and in most cases aloud to groom in open fields up until they are suitable for slaughter.
  • Sadly, over a thousand years of rule by foreign rulers and religions has meant the once “sacred cows” of India are now as destitute as much of its ancient Hindu culture. More often than not, India is associated with cows roaming the roads of India, sitting idly in the middle of a traffic jam, chewing cud of the nearest waste heap and a plastic bag tangled up in the horns. This is a truly sad state of affair. Not because the cow is sacred, nor because it has lost its place in the list of what we consider as precious, BUT, because this is not how we should treat any animal – cow or not. There is also the problem of bride burning. Many married women commit suicide by burning themselves because they cannot not bear the tension and the strain that they and their parents are put through by their in-laws and sometimes by their husbands demanding dowry in the form of a flat, car or cash in return for marrying them. Sometimes the in-laws themselves proceeded to burn the woman. During the 80s dowry and its inevitable consequence like bride burning reached very high proportions but the trend has quietened down in the 90s. The government had made the acts of receiving and giving dowry criminal acts but still dowry as a social evil exits. The incidence of rape also remains high. One hears frequent newspaper accounts of rape of a lower caste woman by upper caste men in some rural area. In 1992, the rape of Bhanwari Devi a social worker from Rajasthan hit national headlines.
  • I've got a question... have any of you ever actually been in a slaughterhouse to see what happens?
  • shouldn't we be more concerned of the plight of humans then enshrine the cows later? http://www.exodusnews.com/editorials/editorial-091.htm
  • No, I don't expect humanity to treat anything humanely.
  • They should not hurt the animal the way they seem to. There should be a quick way to do this.
  • i am now that you mention it.. i try not to think about it
  • Umm... Is it just me or does this question make very little sense the way it is worded? The way it reads is more like "Aren't you disgusted that cows are slaughtered in slaughter houses?". Yes there are probably some things that could be done a good deal better without causing a lot of unneeded pain and suffering for the animals, but at the end of the day, they were brought there to be killed. It isn't like somebody breaks a dogs leg and the dog hobbles around in pain till it heals, they are putting the cow to a post and then any pain becomes irrelevant. I am actually rather disgusted by the cruelty that occurs in some of these places because it shows a much darker side of humanity than most of us would like to see, but I don't think that there is much that can be done given the sadism that seems to be a requirement for those jobs.
  • Misshell, thank god you're ok, the cows were getting restless without their saviour. thought something happened to you as flagg was commenting on your behalf.
  • AHH, geeze, done it again! This is a comment to Ec-nal's answer : "No, cows are food" @ Truman Peyote - Formerly The Big R You're talking to a wall. Anyone, i.e. Ec-nal, that claims animals have no minds, personality nor feelings is either in blind denial or just simply arguing for the sake of it, barking up the wrong tree, got the wrong end of the stick, fishing in the desert, looking for snow in the sahara, looking for gold at the end of the rainbow, you know wha' I mean, 'arry?
  • Yeah, I think it's really horrible.
  • Um no. LOL. Isn't slaughtered how they are treated?
  • Im sure man has been treated throughout history worse.
  • No, I love meat too much to care.
  • It's the part of being a meat eater that sux yo... Mmmmm, steak good....
  • I am very well disgusted [even thou i eat 'em] It suxxx 4 the cow. If u said no above than how would u like it if i cut your head off and ate it 4 dinner. Or how would u like it if i hung u by ur ankles cut off ur head cut into ur ♥ and stomache and ATE YOU!
  • OMG yes! i saw pictures of it in a magazine...i couldn't believe it.
  • People should be ashamed of themselves for treating animals like that. The chickens and pigs haven't got it much better either. I can advise you to buy "Halal" meat. This is the meat Muslims eat. The animals have been despatched quickly and without cruelty. Each animal does not see what is happening to the animals in front of him. It is the most humane way to slay the animals. I always buy Halal meat and it tastes much nicer than normal meat because it has been bled postmortem.
  • They don't feel anything as they are killed instantly they get an easier death than people on death row.
  • Well anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that if people or animals are killed instantly they don't feel any pain. If you are talking about Brazil where they slit cows jugular veins it is cruel, but the rest of the world uses humane killers.
  • How much do you know about cattle farming and dairy farming? Dairy farming and cattle farming in Ireland is grass based meaning they spend 10 months a year out in the fields. Vegans complain about cattle farming yet they have very limited knowledge of farming.
  • There is no civilized way of killing/-
  • not really as long as it tastes good i dont have a problem.
  • To give your question a fair and objective opinion, please let me know where and when was the last time you were at a slaughterhouse and saw the process. If you have been to one recently, I will go to that same slaughterhouse and watch with my own eyes to capture what you have seen. I can then answer your question with a little more information. If you havent been to a slaughterhouse, then I suggest you first make your way to one so you can back up what you are talking about.
  • Hate animal cruelty and the way animals are transported adds to the cruelty also when bad stuff against animals appears on tv i switch over cannot bear to watch it puts me in a stinking mood
  • I don't know anything about how they are slaughtered. Hopefully quickly and painlessly as possible.
  • yes. it's horrible to see them just be killed like that. the people that do this stuff are evil and causing global warming(not really).
  • So I guess I starve and they just get to graze in the pasture or something?
  • sorry to be the reality factor but if it werent for beef there wouldnt even be cows
  • Absolutely. But what troubles me more is that this treatment is seen as justifiable by the business owners solely on the basis of profitability.
  • It is only natural to eat meats as well as vegetables. Have you ever watched Animal Planet or Discovery Channel? No matter how you show something dying it will always look inhumane, but death will happen regardless. Saying that we shouldn't eat animals is putting them on the same level as humans, and that is just not right. We are omnivores (as are many other mammals)
  • By disgusted, do you mean something like the below? Are you referring to the time prior to the slaughter or that of the slaughter itself? I do find all stages to be equally barbaric in their own ways but perhaps you can judge it for yourself from the videos below. I'm not just disgusted, my heart gets shattered to pieces as well. I don't know why human being are so cruel and the law can still accomodate for it. Sometimes it makes me feel like I live among demons. It makes me scare of my own species; that how cruel I find humans can be to helpless, innocent animals.
  • it is DISTGUSTING. i cant think of it without welling up and feeling sick
  • Yes especially for veal..how inhumane how sub-human to deprive a baby calf for tablefare
  • Okay I wasn't going to answer this question because I am probably going to get DRed to fuck for not being a vegitarian... But here goes. Yes I think it is incredibly cruel how they are treated in slaughter houses but even if I give meat up it will make little difference the biggest different will probably be to my personal health. There will always be a demand for meat. I eat meat to keep my protein and iron levels up. I respect animals and love nature. I buy free range eggs, I dont eat fish at all, I help injured animals wherever I find them and I thank the spirit of the animal of the meat I eat before I eat it. I have signed petitions and protested against cruelty to animals including against fur farms and battery hens. I'm not perfect, no one is.

  • No, because of their farting the ozone layer has become x stinked.
  • No,If they don't like it there they can MOOOVE
  • Well.... if you was stranded and there was no food, no shops or anything and there was a cow.. a pan, fire and a kife. what would you do? mmm a good old steak would be nice :P
  • That's why I am a vegetarian - not only is it cruel, the meat itself can be unsafe to eat because of these conditions! It's not just cows, practically any animal that is in high demand for some product is treated appallingly.
  • Honestly No because I really don't care. I'm more concern about how people are treated. Don't care if I get downrated im just saying people are dying in darfur, dying in Iraq, slaugher like dogs in certain parts of Europe and in America kids a starving to death at an alarming rate so cows are far down the list of importance to me
  • Yes, I have seen videos of how pigs, cows, chickens, etc are abused and inhumanely slaughtered. I eat mostly fish and buy free range chicken and eggs. It is nauseating to see the slabs of meat in the grocery store and think of how it got there.
  • Yes, It looks horrible, but the workers are just doing their job,so everyone that eats meat can enjoy!
  • I am disgusted. Fortunately California has tight regulations governing farm animal treatment. I try to reduce my intake of meat, often eating vegetarian, but it's not realistic for me to go without eating any meat. I have blood sugar problems and it's hard enough just trying to eat right without eating vegetarian. I feel bad about eating meat, but don't really feel bad about eating fish (I guess they have tiny brains and seem completely different from people). Logically, it seams that eating a hamburger is more morally wrong than raping little girls.
  • I'm disgusted at how animals are treated int the slaughterhouse - which includes cows, pigs and chickens. There is nothing humane to how animals are killed. It's done at a level of efficiency with little if no empathy to the plight of the animal. Watch the following: http://www.foodincmovie.com/
