If we want stage musicals only here, then my choice is the 60s cult classic, Hair! If they can also be screen musicals, then I must give my nod to the fabulous Moulin Rouge.
-
Les Miserables.

The rocky horror picture show... :-) For me it would be Phantom of the opera.....

I have seen and enjoyed many musicals in my life, many in cinema, not enough on stage. I even performed in High School musicals, plays, and community theater when I was younger. (I'm 51) Have always been a fan of musicals and film, haven't seen a Rogers and Hammerstein movue I didn't like. The 50's were the real golden years for musicals, and MGM seemed to make all of them. My god, think of aall those great Gene Kelly movies... think of the pure skill, innovative dancing, great songs that have not aged. Saying that, I have to also admit that I grew up in the 60's. I am a product of that era. The Beatles have and will always be number one. Pink Floyd, second, then Yes, and so many others, but I digress. I just wanted to show that I wasn't a square by any means... hell, I'll even admit that I enjoyed Mario Lanza. In the same breath, I did not like Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald - chalk screeching on a blackboard was better music to my ears. West Side Story has, and always will be, my favorite all time movie. My grandmother took me to see it down at the (now gone) Boyd Theater, down in Center City (Phila), when it was first released. I was 6 years old. The impact was immediate - and that awe has stayed with me ever since. I just can't describe the pure perfection of the dancing - it was just the most incredible dancing ever created and performed on film and stage. It was Jerome Robin's masterpiece, even among all his other work. At the same time, can you think of any musical composistion that was just so incredible in a musical? The pure complexity of the score, created by Leonard Bernstein, probably the greatest American Composer of the 20th Century - some would say that's a stretch, and champion Aaron Copeland, or the Gershwins, it's a tough argument. This was the kind of music that actually could create, by itself, the location, story, and dancing in your mind that your eyes actually saw. Have you ever looked at the score or triried to play any of the music? Singing it may have been easy, but playing it - wqow, the skill of the orchestra, the individual musicians, just incredible talent. Berstein and Robbins peaked at the same time. It really was a significant milestone in the history of the performing arts. The film won 10 (or 11) Oscars thsat year. Unprecedented, especially for a musical!! I just saw it the otehr day on tv, (for like the billionth time), and it has not aged. And neither have the other great musicals taht I mentioned earlir, and I can't dismiss the Sound of Music. A few good musicals have been released since then, like what some other people have menbtioned here, but nowhere near the perfection or impact of West side Srory.

Porgy and Bess. gershwin. It's sublime.
-
I like "Fiddler on the Roof" too, but "Porgy and Bess" is exquisite.
-
Also there was a Frank Loesser musical called "Greenwillow" that had gorgeous, gorgeous tunes but perished after only two weeks because of some strike or other. I tried to find sheet music for it the other evening. It's nowhere. If anybody has sheet music for "Greenwillow," please hunt me up. There's a song called "Faraway Boy," and one called "Never Never Will I Marry," and a funny song by a clergyman containing the lyrics What a blessing to know there's a devil And that I'm but a pawn in his game And though easily led I can hold up my head Knowing I'm not exactly To blame. What relief Waht a blessed relief That a thief is by nature No thief And a liar is only An innocent buyer Of lies From the liar In chief. So of course The remorse May be brief.
