Mathematics, astronomy, the compass, the Bible, the Koran, the Crusades, variety in the gene pool, opportunities to learn and grow, oil, experience for our military establishment, opportunities to learn diplomacy, beautiful rugs, poppies, the Arabian Nights, music, literature. There have been many contributions from the past and many from the present. You just have to think about the word "contributions" and realize it doesn't necessarily mean positive or negative.

Writing, medicine, mathematics, poetry, trade, engineering, art, to name just a few. The area the world now calls the middle east is the cradle of civilization. It's great societies were flourishing while in Europe people were grubbing about in the mud. Anyone who does not have an appreciation for the history of the middle east ought to look into it. It's awe inspiring to be sure.
