The same reason they eat their own poop. It seems disgusting to us, but I think it has to do with leaving no trace to predators or prey. Just like cats bury their feces, dogs likely eat their vomit so their prey doesn't realize they're in dog territory. This behavior is probably instinctual, and has remained in domesticated dogs. Domestic dogs may also eat their own vomit as a way of trying to exert dominance. When I drop my dogs toy, then rush to pick it up, he will also rush to get it first. Once I dropped a gold bracelet, then made the mistake of quickly bending down to get it. My dog zoomed over and gobbled it up. We checked his poop for days, but never found it. Dogs often try and eat things they're not supposed to in order to be the "boss" and not listen to you.

I think it is because there is still nutritional value in it. Wolves regurgitate to their pups when they are young so as far as Rover is concerned it's not disgusting at all. All he sees/smells in the pool of sick is the food value of the regurgitated kibble or whatever.

Because they can't order pizza?

Come on people. It's not that complicated. Vomit tastes good, according to a dog. It's only food, with a little bit of bile. Dogs eat poop too, because it tastes good and they're hungry.

Dogs have pretty close to a cast iron digestive tract and they have evolved to do this as a survival tactic. In the wild, hunting for prey, it may be days between decent meals and starvation is always a survival threat. The behavior tells us that when the time till the next available meal is unpredictable, at least if you have a canine digestive system, eating your own vomit is more likely to keep you alive than going hunting for another fresh mean. They are not self aware enough yet to think through the fact that the behavior probably puts their survival at higher risk when they are the pet of a human. We will feed then their next meal even if they leave their last laying on the ground, and whatever sickened them on first eating may do them in if they keep re-eating it.

If you were hungary enough you would do the same.
