A 3-D card is mainly used for games. Games like Quake, Unreal, Counterstrike. Stuff like Solitaire or web games rarely need anything like a 3-D card. The two main companies out there are NVIDIA and ATI. ATI makes the quicker card at the moment, if you compare flagship cards.

3D cards are mostly used for games and graphic arts. if the computer is being used for word processing or email then a 3d card is pointless. Most bargain computers come with a display output built into the motherboard so you don't need one, unless you want to play more recent games. The downfall to built in display outputs is that not all features are supported or players can't play at hi-resolutions as they would if you were to get a separate card. Depending on your usage of your computer, you will be able to decide if you need a 3d card or not.

Just to let you know, any video card sold in the last 2-3 years has some hardware 3d acceleration on it. Whether you need 3d capability or not is essentially a moot point nowadays.

3D cards are used primarilly for games and for graphical work (CAD, digital photography, etc...). Whether or not you need one depends one what you use the computer for. However, there is one other reason why a 3D card might make sense. Many motherboards with built-in 3D graphics actually use part of your main memory as graphics memory. This not only reduces the amount of RAM available for other programs, but it also makes your system slower as both the CPU and the graphics chipset want to access RAM at the same time. That is why I upgraded even though I am neither a gamer or a graphics person.
