some of their songs are masterworks, but I definately wouldn't go as far as calling them the greatest band ever.. The problem is that very few bands stay the same.. Metallica was godlike in their early days (Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All in particular), and Iron Maiden has also made som awesome songs, but in common for all three bands is, that for every great song there's two crappy ones which should never have been made

Well they probably influenced most of the bands of the late 70's-Present day. So I would say no.

Not over rated, but not the greatest either. The Beatles created a significant cultural revolution when they emerged. They were a major influence on how music was performed and how bands presented themselves. How "good" the music is is open to debate, but history confirms how significant The Beatles were. Personally, I think The Rolling Stones are the "greatest".

I asked a question similar to this a week ago, and most of the responses I got were: "It was a different era - you had to be there to *get* it" . Odd, since I have no problem *getting* The Rolling Stones, Chuck Barry, The Who, etc.

I don't think that they are overrated as much as, some of us didn't live in that time so we get can't why people love them so much. I am impressed by all the songs that Paul & John wrote. That I get!

I think it's because they were the first to do it all themselves. Like the question implies, they were good, but they weren't as good as the media portrays. They were just the first really popular band to write, compose and perform their own music, which sort of gave permission to everyone else to do it as well. Their were others who did, but were less popular, their was Elvis, who was more popular, but didn't write his own lyrics. The Beatles were just the right package at the right time. Like the Spice Girls (absolute crap). They filled the right space at the right time.

they were pioneers of rock and roll when Britain needed it, also, they have a song for every occasion so me and my friends like to reference lines of their songs in our everyday conversation and then start singing them, leading to the confusion of people around us :)

I never understand this overrated stuff about the Beattles. The question "why are they?" assumes that I think they are. If you don't like something, that doesn't mean that it's overrated. It was different from everything that came before and was their own particular thing is my short answer. It's kind of like Communism. You can love it or hate it but you can't not teach it, because it is unlike any form of government practiced previously.

Do you mean, why do they get so much attention, why do they have so many fans, where their music is not so much better? The reason is: there were not only a good rock group, they have been also pioniers of pop music. At the time where they were active as a group, they explored many new possibilities and innovations. Pop music was not widely spread as it is now. There were not so many good bands. They were also active quite a long time as "The Beatles" (1960–1970). They made music history. Later pop groups had much more competition. They also helped and accompanied a whole generation in its discovery of the world and in the creation of its values. And those fans still admire them, even if they also listen to other music now. I personally don't find them overrated.

So many people who are just coming into their appreciation of music don't understand the innovations the Beatles brought to modern day music. They've heard this kind of music all their life, and don't even realize what it meant. If you look only at the songs they came up with after their own hey-day, you will see that the genius did not survive the fame.

Yes i think they are overrated i mean i don`t hate them or anything but i half to be honest cause i don`t think it is at all fair for them to be called the greatest rock band of all time, sure they wrote a few good songs but only a few and even the good songs they wrote were pop music and NOT ROCK!!! I Think the Rolling Stones are the best when you get Stones you get:Rock you get great songs and the stones changed with their music more stones did Rock,Blues,Country,RandB and funky music.The Rolling Stones are truly the Greatest Rock n Roll band of all time Mick Jagger best frount man and no other can even come close!!I hope i didn`t make anybody mad but it`s my honest opinion and what i feel is right.

Did you all grow up under power lines or something?? The Beatles are the greatest band ever to walk this earth and if you even listen to music today you should be thanking the beatles for what they did. If you think the Beatles are over rated you have no sense in music at all. There will never be another band like them EVER. And I mean EVER. Go listen to your Jonas Brothers and little Wayne and leave the real music questions to people who have both sides of thier brain working.

The Beatles weren't over-rated nearly as much as were The Rolling Stones. Personally, I believe The Beatles changed the way the world looked at popular music. Some of their music was banal and trite, but much of their music was cutting edge stuff for it's time.

Well.... No, I don't believe they were the greatest band of all time. And yes, I do think that they are overrated. Don't get me wrong, I think they were great, and completely different and cutting edge at the time. They changed music forever. However, people talk about them as if they are better than oxygen, and they clearly are not.

They had the commercial success of other "boy bands" like the Backstreet and Nsync, with their own line of merchandise, toys, cartoons, and movies, yet unlike those boy bands, they managed to appeal to everyone across all age groups and social classes, not just preteen girls. If you question this, just look at the vast array of artists that have covered their songs, from Sinatra to Hendrix. And even today, almost 40 years after their breakup, bands are still covering their songs and listing them as influences!

I don't think they were the greatest band of all time, but they were probably the most influential. They had some great songs but a lot of filler too.

I don't think they were overrated for their time, but I find them incredibly old fashioned and MANY bands since have bettered them. Not my thing, but I see why they were loved.

Well there is a lot of territory between those two extremes. As a band and I mean by that musicians playing together I think they were not that great. But they knew how to write songs that captured the public's attention and they had good production. Still they had a good mix of talents together. I think of what they did each on their own after they broke up - some good things but mostly was not as good as when they were together. Which I think says something. They were never my fave band as I was a little young when they became famous and we liked more The Rascals, Motown, The Monkees and the like.

Live, they were pretty terrible. Very limp performances. But for songwriting they were very solid, and prolific. I think they deserve to be highly rated, overall.

They were very good, but then they started doing drug songs. They are certainly not the greatest band ever. We still play a Guy Lombardo tune to welcome the New Year, and Gene Autry is still the best selling version of "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer".
