Does anyone else find strong accents difficult to understand at first and then do you find yourself imitating/copying the accent as you speak to the person? Not disrespectfully, but as a way of following their speech and understanding their conversation?

Working at the casino, I run across lots of people with broken English, I can understand it pretty well, and sometimes have to speak it myself to get my point across - so yes!

On the understanding/comprehension, I have a bit of difficulty with certain accents, ESPECIALLY Indian (good thing I rarely need customer service...) but I never find myself imitating their accent for that reason. The only time I really take on an accent is when I am drunk around Southerners.

I do that!! I try not to, but it always happens! That is how I have ended up being able to mimic a zillion accents!

I find myself copying someones accent all the time. I pick it so naturally I don't notice it till someone tells me I'm doing it. Quite embarrassing sometimes.
