Distances; usually distances that are longer than a tape measure will go, but shorter than something like a car odometer. It's basically a wheel that you walk along with and it counts up the distance traveled. It's good for measuring race courses, for example, as it will give you an accurate distance with all the turns incorporated. Other uses are to set boundaries for sports fields, or measuring distances on a construction site (if one doesn't have those cool laser things)
