If the person isn't in a place to process the emotions, that come with revisting the traumatic event, or are in a situation where they have blanked out the trauma, then it could in individual cases, make things worse for the person. Trauma responses such as shutting down/ going someplace else in their head, protect the person from the abuse, in order to survive. However, shutting down can produce problems in later life, including the avoidant, people pleasing, and narcissistic personality types. People pleasing (fawning), is an survival response to childhood trauma, be it physical, mental or emotional. It's a complex topic.
