Probably because a number of the most famous Brazilians ARE black. There aren't that many reasons for most people in the world to pay a great deal of attention to Brazil, frankly. Why would you expect foreigners to be very familiar with Brazilian demographics?

Who are these "people"? I would guess that you're speaking from personal experience in that perhaps you're Brazilian and someone mistook you for being black. So consequently, you've developed a misconception that "many people" view Brazilians as being black.
