What constitutes a verbal assault? Can I be criminally charged and go to jail for calling someone stupid, fat, ugly, or a big liar?

As far as I understand it has to be threatening language like, " I'm going to kick your ass," or "I'm going to slit your throat," but you can check with the penal code in your state to get an exact answer on it.

Those examples are not criminal, just in incredibly bad taste and immature. Threatening someone is a verbal assault. Now, if you went around harassing a person with those insults and not giving them any peace, that might constitute another criminal offense.

Verbal assault, alone, is not a crime but a threat of harm, which could be considered a verbal assault, IS a crime.
