I think of Puerto Rico when I'm thinking of places to go on vacation.
-
I have family there. I went there once as a teen. I must say that the real Puerto Rico lies outside the San Juan area. The areas outside are where you meet the ordinary wonderful people with beautiful forests and scenery. I see Papaya trees, coconut palms, warm sun and good native food. I have fond memories of that place. The larger cities for me were not as warm or attractive. Then again I wasn't really a tourist. Once I left the airport I left San Juan.

I remember San Juan, the Hard Rock Cafe, El Morro, the beaches and crystal clear waters, El Yunque National Forrest, and Rosie Roads (when it was still open). I remember rum for a nickle a barrel (well, OK: $4.95 a bottle, even for Bacardi Reserve or 151), sharing coconut juice in an act of brotherhood with my shipmates. I remember the sound of crabs popping under the tires at night because they were so numerous on the roads that we couldn't avoid them. I remember cookouts on the beach, snorkeling out to a small island on the enlisted beach at Rosie Roads, the brilliant colors of the sea life. I remember meeting the locals, eating the food, shopping the stores. I remember good times!
