I use Gaim -- it's free, and it supports all the major IM services with a single program. So my Yahoo, Google, AOL, and MSN accounts all work consistently and the messages come and go through a single tabbed window. I very much prefer this to having a half-dozen little IM programs, all with their own quirks. EDIT =================== It can be downloaded here. I use the latest beta version, which is quite stable in my experience: http://tinyurl.com/7mnzk

My messenger of choice is Yahoo, it's simple and not too ugly. I do use Pidgin (formerly know as Gaim) when I have to, so I can communicate with my Hotmail etc friends at the same time as my Yahoo ones...but mostly I just try to persuade people to use Yahoo. My major gripe about Pidgin is the ;P face. It just looks like someone got whacked over the head and their tongue fell out.

I used Google Talk, Skype and Yahoo Messenger, believe me Yahoo Messenger was the best ever until I got a terrible Trojan infection through it, I then deleted it and don't want it anymore, I have kept Google Talk and Skype nothing else.

windows live messenger, haven't bothered with any of the others in long time, my kids use this one and thats the main reason for useing it, like the webcam feature, live chat etc. I like being able to add the free little animated smiley's, changeing the back ground when ever i like it, and the hotmail that goes with it, which I use for those who I rather not have my normal e-mail.

The messenger allows us to communicate in a secure and effective manner over our intranet, no disturb from MSN or other public IM since our boss do not want employee chat to friends during work time, Hope it helps.
