<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Enhanced Benefits
Singulair (montelukast) mediates the immune system's inflammatory response and is used to prevent or treat asthma and to treat allergy symptoms. Allegra (fexofenadine) is an antihistamine used to treat seasonal allergy symptoms. No drug interactions exist between these two classes of drugs. While both drugs are effective on their own, the combination of Singulair with an antihistamine is more effective than the antihistamine alone.
On the Other: Risk of Adverse Effects
No serious side effects are typically seen with Singulair or Allegra, but every prescription or over-the-counter medication presents some risk of drug interactions and adverse effects. Singulair has few reported drug interactions, but may cause dizziness, fatigue or gastrointestinal upset. Allegra interacts with several medications, as well as food and drinks, and may cause headache, fatigue and gastrointestinal upset.
Bottom Line
When treating allergy symptoms, patients should evaluate the severity of their symptoms and the impact on quality of life, the effectiveness and tolerability of any therapeutic options, and the costs associated with treatments. If patients achieve effective allergy symptom relief by taking Allegra and Singulair together, without experiencing unwanted side effects or drug interactions, then the combination can safely be used. Always take drugs exactly as prescribed. Do not start or stop any medications without first discussing it with a physician or pharmacist.
