  • The reason why we sleep is still unknown to scientists. It is not to rest our bodies or muscles, like many people belive, because our bodies don't do anything biologically different when we sleep. But the commonly shared belief is that we need to reorganize the brain. The brain needs to reogranize so badly that if it needs sleep enough, it will automatically shut you down reguardless of how hard you fight it. I'm not positive, but I believe the longest anyone has ever been able to stay up is somewhere around 4 days...which doesn't seem that long considering that some movies show characters who are up for months without sleep, but it's impossible to do that, even with insomnia or any other sleeping disorder. This is also why we believe dreams occur; because as we sleep, we are reorganzing information in our heads. Also, considering that the brain operates because of millions upon billions of neural impulses, which creates our thoughts, emotions, etc. It makes sense that the brain needs to reorganize and take a breather. The reasons why we sleep at night are evolutionary, because at night, our vision is reduced and during those hours is when a large majority of predators come out. So, it makes sense that through evolution, that we sleep at night, because it's safe. When we sleep, we go through about 5 stages. Stage one, we're concioussly awake, but we begin to have odd dropping feelings and we start to daze off. In stage 2, 3, and 4, we are finally sleeping and our brain emits different brain waves. However, stage 5, or REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, we have what is called a paradoxical sleep. During REM sleep, our brain waves look identical to when we are awake and this is the phase when we dream and rejuvinate. The purpose of sleep, we all know, is to refresh and rejuviate, but what our body does to do this is still unknown.
