I would have to say the drums because it isn't just beating on them that makes it sound good but how it is done that makes it sound so good. Also you can take two people hitting the same place on a drum and can tell in a single beat which one knows what they are doing and which one doesn't. A drummer friend of mine said it is not just how you hold the sticks but the pressure in which you grip them.

the piano. it is the easiest to learn to play, but it is the hardest to master. percussive instruments are difficult to control and it has a huge tonal palette ~ its a symphony orchestra in one instrument. i have played piano almost all my life and i still dont consider myself a master. i will always be a musician in progress.

I know this is out there, but I have always heard that one of the hardest to learn is the banjo.

Any musical instrument takes skill ... depends on the single person to be able to master one.

Violin or trombone. Shan has a point about the piano. It may not be as hard to learn to play it but it takes immense skill to master it.

I don't know if you would call that a music instrument but for me it counts - glasses of water or other liquid with different amount of it. Usually goes with a small wand or two.

All instruments are difficult to master - but one where there is little or no guidance at hand must be a greater challenge: I've always thought the sitar looked tricky.

The harp always seemed a bit intimidating to me.

Anything that uses ALL your fingers.....piano, guitar, clarinet, etc.
