  • Many of the re-elected presidents were re-elected because the opposition parties failed to produce strong presidential candidates, who would be capable of toppling an incumbent president. President Grant served a second term and he was even considered for a third term in 1880. Because Grant was a popular military hero, he was a big vote getter even though his term in office was riddled by scandal and fraud committed by members of his administration.
