This varies by state, but here is the universal answer. A temporary restraining order is good until the hearing to show cause. This is usually only a week or two. Once you have had a hearing and have shown cause that a restraining order should be issued, the court will issue a "permanent order." However, the order is not actually permanent. An order can only last for a set period of time established by state statute. However, an order can be renewed, but the court must establish that cause still exists. It is unconstitutional to restrain a free citizens freedom permanently. Also, a judge can issue an order that expires before the state mandated expiration date.
