as an afterthought if you do know how to read longhand your skills are needed in building a historical database From documents photographed that were written in longhand. This is done through family search indexing. it's really kind of cool you look at pictures of World War II documents and draft documents marriage licenses and birth certificates and put this information into a database So that people can search for their ancestors.
Also you can do indexing even if you don't know longhand. Many old documents were typed

I tried to learn shorthand in high school, but lost interest pretty quickly. Everyone in school my age had to learn proper cursive. We learned it in second grade, then had to completely relearn it in third grade, because our third grade teacher said that our second grade teacher taught us incorrectly, but then we went back to the second grade method from fourth grade on. By second year of high school, our teachers didn't care anymore, as long as we wrote legibly. I have never in my adult life had one single situation where writing in proper cursive was of any value whatsoever.
