I think it is because I believe the Bible and not everything has to be 'proven'...thats where faith comes in.
-
Um, no. People who are mentally ill see people who aren't there, when there existence can be confuted. Since no one's disproven a God's existence, they're not considered mentally ill. And I think you and I both know this question was meant to offend people. :)
-
Not mentally ill, just working from a totally different premise. You and I work from the premise that the world is as our senses, technologically enhanced, show it to be. We search in that world for Gods, and fail to find them. Believers work from the premise that God exists, and that senses are secondary. Their search is not whether God exists, but what is the nature of that God, which is what they use their senses to discover. So we and they are arguing in perfect sanity from different start points, and will never meet.

I dont believe in it either, its a book like a childs fairy tale book, anyone wrote it lol

You dont have to prove anything when it comes to matters of faith. Even athiests, pagans, and agnostics all have some sort of faith, Whether it be in a God, or something simple like Love. So, I believe that you dont have to prove anything in the aspect that there is a God, or that Christ died on the cross for our sins. If you have faith that there is some power in the universe that makes you the person you are, then I find that you will be a better person. Dont look at God and religion as a load of hooey.....look at it as a means to better yourself through faith and love.

Im not a believer myself, but I dont think that those who do beleive are mentally ill. I believe in aliens, Ive never seen one and there is nothing to prove that they exist, however, I dont consider myself to be mentally ill, it is simply a belief.

No facet of the theory of evolution can be proven....do you think people who believe in that are mentally ill? I'm not trying to stir a evolution/creation debate or offend anyone either. The point is that faith - in why we (as complex beings in an amazingly complex world) are here - is a question many seek and often claim an answer for. IMO, we should all seek these answers. Labeling everyone who disagrees with you as defective doesn't show you to be a rational person, just someone relying in faith. In your case it's faith not in God, but in unproven science or what have you.
-
I think that mental illness is more likely to be present in people who habitually ridicule other peoples' beliefs while, at the same time, expecting to have their own beliefs respected.

Dennis Prager has frequently said that it seems humanity is programmed to accept some beliefs that are not wholly rational. I freely admit that my belief in God is not wholly rational; I have no proof that God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and I can't prove that Jesus will return to judge the world. But agnostics and atheists have a need to believe in the irrational too. Look how many are convinced of MMCCC--manmade catastrophic climate change. But every week I learn of two or three more excellent reasons to believe that it is, as next week's Newsweek cover will assert, a hoax. It's overwhelmingly the secular, the "rational," who believe in MMCCC, even though it is irrational to do so. Because it's not man-made and whatever climate change we have will be manageable, not catastrophic. But none of this irrationality makes either me or the global-warming fanatics mentally ill. Neither of us could be "cured" by psychotherapy, and I wouldn't recommend it for them. (Though the Soviets certainly used it on us!)

People who believe in any kind of God and/or religion are not mentally ill be default. Most of them are in fact just as normal as anyone else. What they can be, and very often on this site are, blinded by their religion.
-
Science cannot provide answers to any of the important questions. I don't think it's crazy to have a bit of faith to try to answer those questions. And no, you are definitely not alone in your opinions.
-
No but I would say they are shockingly optimistic people.
-
No, because the same rule applies. How can you definitively prove there is no God? You must first prove your assumption in order to have the burden of truth satisfied sufficiently to ask a question which requires such assumptions. To assume their is no God because His existence cannot be proven, is to also say that His existence cannot be DISproven, therein lies the fallacy of your assumption of hooey.
-
If you are a non-believer, that's fine. But thinking that believers are mentally ill makes you sound a bit loony yourself. The existence of love, sorrow, compassion, jealousy, remorse and hate cannot be proven. Do you believe they exist or are they a lot of of hooey? I think it's a load of hooey and incredible small-mindedness to believe that nothing exists beyond the physical world and that anything that cannot be proven cannot exist.

No more than religious people find non believers mentally ill because they have no faith. No offence intended

Your question is ambiguous. Is the question "Are people who believe in God mentally ill?" or "Are people who do not believe in God mentally ill?"? Either way, I believe neither group is mentally ill. Catholics believe the desire for God is written in the human heart, because each person is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw each person to himself. For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 27: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect1.htm#chpt1 I think that there is no proof of God because God does not want there to be proof. It is a kind of challenge. Jesus said to him (Thomas), "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed." But if you think about it, there is more proof that God exists that there is about: + Love + Friendship + Patriotism + Duty + Community + Fidelity + Courage + And the like You know they are there, but can you prove it? With love in Christ.

Relegion is based on faith. Faith is beyond scientific examination to get proof. If one does not believe in God, it is also a belief or faith. What is wrong if some one clings on to his faith which could give him peace of mind and solace?
-
No, I don't think they're mentally ill -- most religious people demonstrate the normal range of scores on IQ tests, are able to hold down steady jobs, etc. "Delusional" would be the word I'd use to describe them.
-
There's religion, and then there's just the plain truth. I would ask that you give some honest deep thought and seeking for yourself and see if it is true. If your heart is open ( which I hope it is), that you would come to the understanding that the Bible is very true, and it can be relied upon more than any physical thing you own. This may not make sense to you this moment, but should you seek for yourself you'll find out for yourself there's a reality much much greater than what you see in the world. By the way, I am sinner who is still struggling with sin, but I know it to be true.

Most people who follow a religion live a happy and healthy life with strong family values. Fanatics are an exception to this rule and they fall under the heading mentally ill. We shouldn't paint all with the same brush. P.S. I am an atheist
-
Yes. Look at the 'born-again' whatever. The majority of them have substituted the god delusion for drugs, alcohol, sex addiction, gambling, whatever. These people have addictive personalities and need something to clinch on to otherwise they can't make it thru the day. They can't handle reality on their own
-
To be fair im agnostic, but i do belive some people need faith as a sort of closure, its like a child with out there tedy, there afraid to sleep, and people who are religios want something to belive so they dont fear death. i admitt theres proof saying theres no "god" but theres no proof to say theres nothing after life, god could be a metaphor for an after life who knows.

It's really a personal thing. If you believe, fine. If not...Fine! It's simply a matter of personal thoughts, feelings and choices. No one can "Force" you to believe, that's up to you and only you. If they start harassing you to believe/follow, then I suggest you avoid that person, they're getting into too deep and becoming fanatical possibly.
