(Loyd again) - Because there is a B in both and an N in neither. (Get it? Aldous Huxley, 1928) - Because it slopes with a flap. (Cyril Pearson, undated) I personally like the inky quills one too. However, since the riddle was originally posed in one of Carroll's works, one should probably go with his explanation. According to him, there originally wasn't a real answer (it was just meant to be nonsensical and fun, like much of his writings for children), but due to so many public inquiries he thought up one (see Jennifer's very good response above)... And yes, the actual quote IS NEVAR, not never, because that was Carroll's little inside clever joke about the wrong end first..NEVAR is RAVEN written backwards) (am sure the joke was more hilarious back in 1896 lol)

lewis carroll himself answered this riddle (as it was his own): "Because it can produce a few notes, though they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!" Note the misspelling of “nevar” so it is "raven" spelled backwards.... THAT is the real answer!
