The Sinhalese are from Sri Lanka. They are the major ethnic group and speak Sinhalese. They are Buddhist in the main. They are distinguished from the Tamils in the North, who are descendants of Indians who fled there at sometime in the past. The Tamils are Hindu. The two groups have been at war for a long time, but there has been a permanent cease fire for a few years now.
