No, it doesn't annoy me.
-
Certainly not. It shows that they are well educated. I speak three languages myself. I would certainly hope, if they are US citizens, that one of those fluent languages is English. However, I am smart enough to keep the government out of the language business.
-
As long as they can speak 'american' as well I guess it's OK. It's a big world out there and there's some well travelled people.
-
Why would it annoy you? Unless you're Native American or of 100% English ancestry, your grandparents or theirs, spoke other languages when they arrived as 'aliens' on these shores.
-
NO, but what does annoy me is when I have to press 1 for English when calling my bank
-
Wait.... ....other languages from what?
-
Not at all. Why shouldn't they enjoy speaking their native tongue or one in which they are comfortable speaking to friends and family. And in Canada it is very common to have people speaking all sorts of languages as you travel around, much more than here. But it's charming.
-
Depends..I find languages and cultures to be fascinating..That said, I think that the inability to speak your country of citizenship's (be it by birth or choice)language should be mandatory to a degree. I think that if I were going to live in a foreign country that I would feel compelled to learning that language (unless I were just a visitor) simply as good manners to the country that I am a citizen of. However, as I said I love learning languages and I will often try to speak mandarin in my own country --more as a learning tool..but I think you don't mean leaning it as an educational thing...:)

I concur with Wide Awake Phoenix in that it shows a degree of education and intelligence. I wish I had diciplined myself to have learned more then one language. I personally think that persons who are annoyed are actually jealous of the other persons skill and abilities to do something they were unable to accomplish.
-
no not really. I hope that when i travel to other countries people aren't saying it is annoying that I am speaking English.
-
Unless they are blatantly talking about you, then yes. But otherwise no. I like the fact that this country has more then one popular language.
-
No, why would it? I hear people speak in different languages all the time. So long as the people communicating understand each other, it isn't my business. I don't feel a need to understand what everyone around me is saying. I know I don't feel that my conversations in shopping malls are everyone's business.
-
no, it is however really annoying to hear an american trying to speak french - just shutup and point to what you want on the menu, they already think you are an ass so stop trying to be so cool (your date thinks you are an ass too)
-
If they keep looking at me and scowling, then I suppose it would be! :P Other than that, no, I don't mind (although for the record I'm in Canada). I actually spend quite a bit of time in my city's Chinatown... I hope THEY don't find ME annoying!
-
Nope. What annoyed me was when people would come into the County building and expect ME to be fluent in THEIR language, and get pissed off when they find out I'm not. As far as I'm aware the only official language of the United States is STILL English.
-
Not in the least.
-
I get a bit jealous when I can't understand them, but not annoyed by any means. I can speak Spanish, so I can at least get the gist of most of the romance languages. I can pick up on some Eastern European languages, but I can only really tell when they are swearing. I'm utterly fascinated by German.
-
well, english..which is spoken in america could be considered an "other language" it certainly isn't the native language. To answer your question..no, I don't think it is..I like hearing people speak other languages.
-
No, but it bothers me when people who CAN speak English pretend that they can't when it benefits them.
-
Why should it? America is a mixed culture from the start.. The Irish, Dutch, French, English, Native Americans etc. etc. etc. Its a mixed pot...
-
no, but what annoys me is americans in other countries shouting in american thinking that the local should speak english (we brits are guilty of this also)
-
It does not annoy me to hear them speak English because I understand that language, most of the time.
-
Yes and its disrespectful.
-
no. but i think there should be some programs to encourage adults to learn at least basics - even if it's not in school. a lot of parents depend on their kids to speak the language and translate for them. it's just as irritating for them to not understand english ins the US as it is for me to not be able to help them get what they need. but this is why i plan on learning 5 languages within the next 10 years
-
It is more annoying to have ballots in multiple languages.
-
It's annoying when people think that English is the only language. But it's most annoying when people can't speak their first language correctly. Languages are so beautiful, I wish I knew more of them.
