Are there any alternatives to using styrofoam for meat trays?

Yes, there are lots of alternatives. We could used some other plastic, waxed cardboard, glass, metal, wood, etc. I don't know just what application you are talking about, but what ever it is, styrofoam was probably chosen because it was the deemed to be the best choice.
