You really want a car that won't break down and has heat and A/C. you'll spend most of your money on the car and insurance with nothing much left over. The last thing you need is to go in debt fixing the car. trust me - with a first car, the looks should not really matter.

This link will list the most fuel efficient autos. Worry about pick-up more than top speeds. A Ferrari can do 180, but it still has to follow the speed limits. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bestworst.shtml If you're buying the car used, make absolutely sure a mechanic looks at it first. I would suggest something like a Toyota Yaris or a Ford Ka. They are fairly nifty looking things, but reliable with it (assuming you don't drive them into a tree).

Consider practicality: a coupe, where you have to slide out of your seat to let people get in back, can get to be a pain, especially in bad weather.
