Amazing question.. top ++. I'm going to go with Tim Alexander (doubling a hi-hat on the left and right of your kit, putting six splash cymbals in various places just so they are easy to whack, octobons, gongs, china crashes.. very unique and the roadies probably hate him). Unique in style has to go to Steve Gadd, hands down. Insane talent goes to Keith Carlock, bar none. I think we're talking about Western drummers. There are some Indian and Japanese drummers that are beyond the scope of reference. A little Tim: http://drummerworld.com/Videos/timalexander.html A little Steve, everyone's favorite and one of the most unique grooves in modern history: http://youtube.com/watch?v=sZZLLYEzKE8 Carlock: http://youtube.com/watch?v=_63R8EAu6WI

Nothing for nothing here, but I ran across this drummer in a local NJ band Mean Venus. It took me a minute to remember this guy because he is a lot bigger now and shaves his head, but I caught his name online and to my surprise it's him. This guy had auditions setup with Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam back in the day. I never understood what happened to him, but figured he was afraid of success. This guy is real good and real unique and his name is Chris Dowd. He fell off the face of the earth for 10 years or so. Think some things went real wrong in bands with him and he gave up, but I don't know for sure. Anyway this guy is a real good unique drummer.

No one. You are either unique, or you aren't - there's no "most" about it. It's like being pregnant or dead - you are or you aren't.
-
Steve Gadd.

First name that sprung to mind was Jack DeJohnette. I don't typically pay a lot of attention to the drums (sorry!), but when I listen to his recordings with Miles Davis I am always blown away. Vinnie Calaiuta was my other choice. Heard him with Herbie Hancock a few months ago.

That's an impossible question to answer, as there are so many intricacies in drumming, and so many ways to be considered unique. However, the most original and vocal drummer in POP music has go to be Stewart Copeland from the Police. No one since him has stood out in such an original and defiant way. His drumming gave that band a dimension that catapulted them so far ahead of the game. I am in no way a Police fan, just to make that clear, I'm a musician with an open ear and mind and give credit where its due.
