I'd hazard a guess it is dirty and smells bad. Perhaps you should pick it up when he's finished. I've had a cat that tried to bury my plate too. and anothe that would scratch the wall to get more kitty litter My girlfriend says it's natural.... they bury food to eat it later.

It's something that many cats do. They are trying to hide their food once they are done eating it. It doesn't mean they think it is their poop or disgusting. They don't cover their feces for that reason, either. It's to cover it so it's not as noticeable to other animals, they are trying to hide it.
