The Internet! with the internet came the information age. Because of it mankind has been able to expand it's knowledge more in the last 20 years than it has in the last 200 years.Everyone sharing information increases the speed @ which new technology is developed,and allows us to complete tasks that would otherwise be very time consuming.

definitely sanitation. Before 1895 there was hardly any sanition not even in medicine. The lack of sanitation caused high infant mortality rates.

I don't if there is one greatest, but the plow comes to mind. Led to greater productivity in agriculture, without which city-states and empires would never have existed.

All of the things practical I have seen listed were not invented, they were discovered, or harnessed. They always existed, it is just that man discovered them, or discovered how to use them. I would say the greatest "invention" of mankind was the automobile which includes the use of an engine in flight or sea travel. It is semantic, but it is relevant.
