  • 1-8-2017 Many foods require fat. Pie crust made with lard is very much flakier than pie crust made with butter or shortening, but butter has the best flavor. Shortening is cheaper and keeps better, so most pie are made with shortening. Mayonnaise was invented by a French chef when he ran out of cream. French fried potatoes have much better flavor when fried in lard. Experiment.

      Interesting informative answer, Jewels Vern...A lot of people are fooled about using margarine and shortening....My Grandparents ate food that was cooked in lard and ate real butter...They lived into their 90s.
