The Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, along with their biplane and crew, gathered on a beach in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on Dec. 17, 1903. Wilbur won a coin toss to fly first and climbed into the 700-pound wood plane. The flight lasted only 12 seconds and went a distance of 120 feet.
