<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: A Pervasive Belief
According to a report published by eMed TV, there's a pervasive belief that oral contraceptives such as Seasonale cause weight gain. In fact, the report says, many women stop taking their birth control pills because they're afraid they will gain weight. Mayo Clinic doctors acknowledge a woman may retain fluid that makes her feels as if she's gaining weight.
On the Other: Research Says Otherwise
When researchers from Family Health International examined the medical literature in 2006, they found no evidence of a link between oral contraceptives like Seasonale and weight gain. According to a May 2009 Mayo Clinic FAQ on birth control pills, studies continue to confirm that oral contraceptives have little or no effect on weight gain.
Bottom Line
EMed TV experts concluded that the weight gain described by women on Seasonale is probably unrelated to the pill itself. Rather, they postulate, it can be attributed to poor diet, inactivity, and other factors.
