Such as motion detector alarm at all entrances ... window locks/alarms etc .... and you can buy these door alarms that will chime if you just open the door etc when alarm is OFF ..OR you can set it as an alarm to give piercing noise if the door is opened like during the night etc .... Besides the obvious, lock doors, close shades at night, close windows. I'll say refill the oil in the car, change the tires on a car, and how to read those direction papers on putting stuff together. That last one sounds obvious, but after spending 6 hours on putting together my simple futon bed, it's not so easy i have discovered ._.

Basic toilet repair is handy. Most of the things that go wrong with toilets are relatively easy to fix. And being able to do it yourself saves big bucks plus irritation waiting to get a plumber out to do it for you.

This suggestion isn't just for women. Carry your car registration and proof of insurance in your purse. If your car is stolen, they at least won't know where you live. There's more of a chance my car will be stolen than that my purse will be . . . at least where I live.

Locate the main breaker panel and learn how to reset a breaker or shut off the power in case of emergency. Locate the main water shut off in case of a pipe break. Replace the door to the bathroom with a solid door with a deadbolt lock added, to make a safe room. Keep a cell phone on you or in your safe room, land lines can be cut by burglars or rapists. Keep some type of weapon in your safe room. Obvious one, learn to cook a healthy meal.
