I would say Alvin Lee or Jerry Garcia.

I would vote for Joe Satriani, but he says that he and his kind are just standing on the shoulders of Jimi Hendrix, so I guess it has to be... Jimi Hendrix.

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN! The master of shred! Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton. Remember, it's not always about the speed, it's the way the riffs sound, and the progression.

Matthew Kiichi Heafy!!! He's the guitarist for Trivium, and he is completely f***ing amazing. His guitar solos are so fast, that its almost impossible to even come close to for rock artists and heavy metal artists today. His music that he makes is so amazing and catchy, on their new CD, The Crusade, he made up an 8 minute song, only guitar solos, he made it up all by himself!! Trivium is sort of a new band, compared to some of the guitarists that are in these answers. If he isn't the greatest now, he's going to be in 10 years. The thing that makes Matt K. Heafy amazing is that he's only 21 years old and can play guitar like he's been playing it for 20 years. This is a video of Matt Heafy playing for something on British TV-the second guy in the video is Cory Beaulieu, another amazing guitarist and a member of TriviuM

Randy Rhoads. There are faster players, like Nuno Bettencourt, and some with good clear back up and mixing, with good effects mixers, like Joe Satriani, but I find Joe Satrianis style lacking feeling and originality. Jimi Hendrix is absolutely wild, lots of feeling and truly a pioneer in blues guitar, but then he gets a little too wild and goes off the deep end. The drummer is often skipping a beat or double beating to catch up when he gets off, and sometimes it dwindles of into delusional meandering phrases. He's great at bringging it back in by returning to a previous motif or counterpoint in key, but it still gets you out of sync with where he's trying to go with it. Iron Maiden and Metallica have some good guitar work, but Iron Maiden is a lot of overdubbing five six, even seven guitars sometimes. Good writing and mixing, live i would have to wonder if it can be reproduced, and there is very little or no improvisation or progression. Metallica is rather simple classical performed with distortion, but take away all the reverb, overdrive, distortion and feedback, there is little left. The most driving rythms are mute and repetitive. They do have some very nice "unplugged" pieces, but they invariably, inevitably, rely on that heavy metal mindless drivle. Yngie Malmsteen? I don't know enough of his music to even comment on it. Eddie Van Halen is alright, pretty good really, but, well I guess it's just a matter of taste. They both use pinch harmonics a lot, Randy Rhoads used a lot of very subtle bends, whereas Van Halen tends to use wild dives and bends with the bar. I like the natural harmonics used by Randy Rhoads, reaching aboe the fret hand with his right to bend tha strings above it during tremolos. I definitely like his use of legatos a lot more than Van Halens. Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughn are very good at a certain style... but the composition of Randy Rhoads' solos, his ability to improvise live and actually improve on those solos, is incomparable. The influence of classical guitar is ever present, and gives such great depth to his pieces that you can never get bored with them. Then there's the emotionally packed rythm. Comparable to any of the heaviest metal bands, but with a lot more versatility, with many interlude riffs, point and counterpoint phrasing mixed in. There are probably a dozen of his songs that I could listen to or play every day, and never get bored of it.

-
Stevie Ray Vaughn. Why? He was pure talent.
-
I think I'll have to go with Andres Segovia.

Jimi Hendrix for sure in my book. Experimental genius, total control of pitch, distortion, etc. Ahead of his time, and an inspiration to millions of people the world over.
-
Jimi Hendrix http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix
-
Stevie Ray Vaughn had such an ear for bringing out the best out of his guitar but I don't know if he was better than classically classy Segovia. I'd have to have the two categories, electric and acoustic because they are so different. I wonder if anybody will talk about or remember JerryC and funtwo in 20 years time???
-
Dave Davies IMHO
-
Jimi Hendrix or Santana

I believe that this is a duplicate; but, I'm gonna answer it anyway. I love Neal Schon of Journey. He is an amazing guitarist. If you want a sample of his best stuff you should listen to "Of a Lifetime" from their debut album entitled Journey.
-
Your answers are going to vary, but I'll throw in my two-cents, Ace Freghley
-
Shawn Lane. Most underrated guitarist of all time. He had so much soul and could play any style.
-
ME! :P I hardly ever play the guitar and yet I know I'm worthless at it, isn't that a measure of talent when you know you've got none :P.
-
Eddie Van Halen...have you heard his music and guitar riffs? If so, then I don't need any further explanation.
-
jimi hendrix or stevie ray vaughn
-
Eric Clapton !! He is to the guitar as Michelangelo was to paint and his canvas. He is a true Master of his art !!
-
Angus Young, his leads are so pure, and he's proven to have the longevity as well. In another genre I would say Leo Kotke is pretty amazing as well. HOnorable mentions to Stevie Ray Vaughn and BB King, and maybe Chuck Berry for kicking off the screaming guitar era.
-
The most inspiring for me is Dave Gilmore but I am musically inept and probably no judge of a great technician!
-
Chuck Berry - I love it
-
john mclaughlin. mahavishnu orchestra in the early 70's? forget about it.
-
ANGUS, because he rocks like no other. He feels it and it shows. Angus Young is the epitome of a rock n roll guitarist. He may not be technically as perfect as some others, maybe he didn't die of an overdose to achieve fame, but damn, that dude rocks like no other. Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, nor Slash can carry Angus jockstrap.
-
Dimebag! |m/ 'Rocked like no other! ; ) Such an inspiration to me : D *sigh* RIP Brother Dime : ( Died doing what he loved... Can't ask for much more I suppose : /

The guitarist from Primus. I don't know his name.

There are many, but I wouldn't feel right if someone didn't mention Eddie Van Halen. He's been out of the game FAR too long, but to me his axe was the voice of my generation.
-
John Petrucci from Dream Theater. He is a great composer and guitar player, and can play a 7-string like no one's business.
-
Eric Clapton is God
-

All guitarists must bow and thank Jimi Hendrix for what he has done for all rock guitarists. With only a wawa pedal a stack of marshall amps and his right handed fender stratocaster restrung upside down ,so he could play it left handed,he brought the guitar into an artform others before him never dreamed possible, and all that followed him try to imitate.
-
There are different answers here: Most memorable guitar riffs- nobody close to Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin except possibly for Richie Blackmore Most versatile guitarist-Eric Clapton Most knowledgeable- Joe Satriani Most innovative- Jimi Hendrix Most underrated guitarists- Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac and Terry Kath of Chicago, who handled the guitar like it was a mere toy and was the only guitarist that Jimi Hendrix said was better than him.
