  • From what I have read, you can reliably take deer-sized game with 7.62x54R hunting rounds out to 300 yards with correct shot placement. For bear, I'd keep it to 100 yards or so.
  • The 7.62x54 is a full size rifle caliber. it is reliably lethal on deer size game out to 7 or 800 yards in a good rifle with good optics. offhand in hunting situations with iron sights you should be able to easily make kills at 300 yards if you are familiar with the gun. This round is most commonly chambered in surplus eatern bloc military rifles. the bore condition and accuracy of these vary greatly. if it will keep all shots under three inches at 100 yards it is accurate enough to hunt with out to 250 300 yards. I have reliably seen black bear taken with a .308 winchester and the 7.62x54 is very close in performance. anything bigger and i would move into a magnum caliber for safety's sake
