This is for my maiden name: The name is said to derive from the Gaelic, Mac Chruiter, which finds its source in the Gaelic term "chruiter" meaning "harper", the cruit being an old stringed instrument. It was the custom of lairds to appoint a personal harper and the position of "cruiteir", or harper, was often hereditary in the Highlands, and the role devolved in each case to the son of the harper or the MacChruiter in Gaelic. This name became M'Whirter in Old Scots, the language of the lowlands and has since manifested itself in many variants of which McWhirter is one of the most common.

Scarcella means a "money bag" (ironic because we haven't got any! LOLOL) in northern Italian dialects such as Venetian, although apparently in Piemontese it is a heron. The former meaning seems to apply to our family, though, as there is a medieval shield belonging to some reputed ancestor which as gold coins on it, so I can assume he was responsible for funding some venture or other. In Le Puglie, there is an easter cake, a baked plaited pastry basket with a coloured egg in it called a "scarcella", once again a reference to the "money bag" idea.

I dont know really. I was thinking of changing it, so I regard this quesiton for both of them. All I know is that people seem to think that "Ruggiero" sounds like rigatoni and "Torreggiani" sounds like tortellini.... I dont get it, but that seems to be the way telemarketers and Bulgarians pronounce them both. I think Ruggiero originates from Naples.

My last name is Hicks In old English slang it it was a term used to discribe loyal suporters of King Richard while he was off on a crusade. The name was originally Dicks or Pricks but over time it became Hicks. It is still used to describe a person or group of people as lower class. Hick Towns, a bunch of Hicks. On the other hand if Robin Hood had been a real person, he would have been a Hicks.
