I'm not. I was married to a Jewess for eight years and my younger daughter (22-y-o) is half Jewish. She's tickled by being, as she says, "...half-and half of two of the three toughest races on the planet, Jewish and Scottish." So I have a boatload of Jewish ex-in-laws. And my sister converted to Judaism in her mid-thirties. I've attended lots of Jewish functions: bar-mitzvahs, bat-mitzvahs, weddings, funerals, Sabbath services, Seders, Shivas, etc. I'm so integrated with Jewish relatives that I own my own yarmulke. You've got to realise that "Jewishness" is a matter of religion, not of genetic heritage. Any Jew will tell you that the Jews are not a race but a religion. But in the same breath, he'll tell you that "Jewishness" comes through the mother. Now, figure that out. There's more. The three main branches of Judaism are Conservative, Orthodox, and Reformed. Reform Jews interact fully with the modern world; Orthodox try to blend tradition with modernity. Conservatives adhere strictly to the rigid laws of the Old Testament. I have had dinner in the home of Conservative Jews who -- I later learned -- broke the plate that I ate from and threw away the silverware. As a Gentile, I had "contaminated" those objects that I touched. Conservative Jewesses can't even TALK without the husband's permission. This is probably TMI. Sorry.
