Is it a good idea to water your houseplants with beer?

watering houseplants with stale beer is most certainly good for the houseplants. It makes them much greener and healthier looking. I am not sure why, but it does work. I discovered this tidbit in South Hampton Ontario in a wonderful restaurant. I always thought the plants were fake until one day I brushed up against one and realized it was real. When I questioned the owner as to how she kept them looking so green and healthy, she told me she gives them a little bit of stale beer once every couple of weeks. I tried it and it works.

Sounds like a expensive way to water a plant. Yet coffee and plasma are great plant foods.

Hi babbling brook No, I am not pulling your leg, it is true. I am a lover of plants so believe me I would never suggest doing something that would kill them. However, DO NOT use large amounts of beer. I usually dump a bottle into one of the large long spout watering cans, fill it with water and then water. Give it a try. I don't know if it works the same for all houseplants, but I have some that flower and some that are just foliage and all seem to be thriving, especially my hybiscus. It has never looked of healthy. Beer does contain some nutrients. As long as you mix it with regular water too.

A small amount of beer won't harm your plants, but you shouldn't water them with beer all the time. In fact, you should really save the beer treatments for your outdoors garden. Beer in the soil outdoors can attract beneficial bacteria and insects, but it won't do much good indoors.
