  • If you are decently computer literate, you will know which services to start disabling. If you aren't too familiar with the services running you should probably go to the SERVICES MSC instead of using the MSCONFIG one, Start -> Run -> Services.msc There is a description of each service, well, at least the ones that are from known manufacturers and not trojans or viruses or something bad. You might want to find out what RUN items are in the registry, the easiest way to view these is to install the STARTUP control panel program ( http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml ) and you will have an easy to view registry run view.
  • If you're not extremely computer literate I would do some research first, and learn the pros and cons of disabling various services. There really is no cookie-cutter approach as different folks have varying needs for some services. You may find that some folks will tell you to disable services that you might want. Others might tell you that you should keep running services that you have absolutely no use for. And there are some services that turning off will really (I mean REALLY) louse up your computer. Do some research first. A good place to start is http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
