Where did the phrase "blind as a bat" originate. As far as I know, bats aren't blind.

Most bats are blind in day light, they have special eyes that magnify light quite alot so they can see in the dark (although they use ultrasonic sound to get around, they can still see) and this makes it very painful and almost impossible for them to see in daylight. I think that is why that phrase came about!
