  • My understanding is that it simply means to make associations, sometimes not even related to the original idea. Like the old saying that necessity is the mother of invention. Until I did it I would not have thought to use vicks vapo-rub to fix a squeaky door hinge.
  • I read the book Lateral Thinking by Edward de Bono and it was exactly that -- making intuitive leaps to solve problems rather than straight deduction. Great book. It gives you methods of actively using lateral thinking to figure out novel solutions to problems. Use these methods at least once a month.

  • Having vertical thought is to dig deeper on the same subject. To have horizontal, or lateral thought to consider together many different subjects.
  • Try 3 dimensions; spherical thoughts will get your head spinning.
