A health insurance physical is similar to an ordinary physical. All the same questions are asked, and the same testing and evaluations are performed. Most insurance companies require applicants to undergo a physical examination by a certified doctor in order to identify any preexisting medical conditions.
Visual Check
A doctor will usually perform a visual check first. He'll be looking at your general appearance and behavior. Height and weight are measured, vital signs are recorded.
Upright Position
Usually you sit on the end of the examination table for a thorough inspection of the skin, eyes, ears, nose and throat. Mouth, including tongue, pharynx and neck, back, lungs and armpits are also checked.
Lying Down
Breast and armpits are usually examined to detect lumps. A stethoscope is used for chest and lungs to monitor heart rate and breathing. The abdomen and internal organs are investigated by feel as well. Legs are checked for swelling.
Private Areas
The rectum and anus are evaluated externally and visually, as are the reproductive organs.
Standing Up
While standing, your spine will be observed for straightness, and the legs and feet are noted for their alignment.
No Exam
Some insurance companies may not require you to get a physical, though you will still be required to answer questions in a truthful and honest manner regarding your health.
