50 years ago, grandmother would use nothing but linen napkins, linen table cloths (usually Belgian lace) and English bone china. But today, for me, paper napkins and Crate and Barrel are fine. How times have changed

Strictly cloth. Economically it makes MUCH more sense, and cloth napkins are much more "elegant" (read: softer) and also much more useful (lots of uses other than just as napkins). I don't use paper napkins OR paper towels, and have NO regrets in making that choice. To me, they make no more sense than buying bottled water when I have fresh, potable water from the sink any time I want it.
