Yes. The Count of Monte Cristo. It's my favorite book, but it can get very dry in places as Dumas goes into minute detail. Every movie version I've seen has been an excellent adaptation of the book, and are strong enough to stand on their own.

Yes, I preferred the film Green Mansions over the book. The book bored me. I tried reading it as a kid and didn't like it and then I read it again as an adult and still felt the same. It was good, but not great. I really liked the movie.
