This is a sweeping statement I find the thought of watching violence against another human being or an animal absolutely abhorrant. I appreciate that a lot of people do have a very weird facination for seeing cruelty but it is not something that I can understand.

I think that maybe everybody is a little bit homicidal inside but since that is majorly frowned upon that they instead take pleasure out of watching other people's pain.
-
I think those kind of people have become desensitized.

Some people are just crazy and need to be institutionalized

i think when people see people die in video games they want to see it in real life.

People have become desensitized to light violence on TV and graphic violence in movies. I believe much of what is happening has to do with people who watch violence and people doing things to others somehow get a "release" of anger and other pent up feelings inside of them. So vicariously they are releasing their own stress by watching these atrocities and violent and cruel things, even though they would never do them in real life. It seems like a sick way to get rid of tension and anger, but if one doesn't get rid of it in other ways, this is one way that works for many people. Not very pleasant, but it is common.

Humans like that kind of thing, no matter who they are. There is a reason we have the news on 24 hours a day, and it's not so we can watch piles of clothes read to us about where to go for the best pizza in town. It's so we can see all of the truly horrifying crap going on in the world. And the closer it is to your house, the better.

The attraction to violence in our media may directly correlated to our internal enjoyment of competition and overcoming obsticals, this is particuarlly interesting as seen in major sports such football, hockey, boxing, A study was done at Florida State University showing how the more violent a sports video was the more enjoyable it was. As far as horror movies are concerned, it is partially a rite of passage. Proving to your peers that nothing bothers you this is particuarlly dominate in males. Also while watching horror or suspenseful movies your body releases hormones such as adrenaline and several others that gives you a almost natural "high" feeling. In regards to the increase in violence in film it has everything to do with desensitization, the more you see the more you have to see the next time to get the same chemical release from our bodies. As some people have previously stated that it may be a release of rage or anxiety studies by respected pyschologist have proven that it does not.
