My husband is nearly 40 and is still very influenced by his mother. he calls her before he makes any major decision. I think that most people, if they have decent ( I didn't say good) relationships with their parents, continue to be influenced by them.

In most western, so-called "advanced" societies; at 7 they start resisting, and by 12 they're pretty much emancipated (Though they still pretend that their mommy's and daddy's opinions still count).

Never. Even once a child gains their own opinions and beliefs, they are and always will be influenced by their parents. Children spend the most developmental years of their lives with their parents and that is a huge part of what makes them who they are.
