  • The same as an American accent sounds to someone with an American accent. It's just more unusual to us since we don't here it as often. Interestingly I always think English accents (I wouldn't really say there is a 'British' accent since people from Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland talk so differently) sound odd often on films or tv programmes that contain mostly American accents. This may just be due to an American stereotyping and exaggeration of the accent or just down to the contrast with the other voices.
  • I once lived in France and spoke, lived and even dreamt in French. One night, on the TV a show came on, and the actors were speaking English (with an American accent). My brain did not recognize it right away and I had the experience of being able to hear what American English sounds like to the foreign ear. I distinctly remember wide open and loud vowel sounds. Big open vowels.... That's not a British experience but that's the best I can share.
  • I have what Americans would consider a British accent, I wish I had a more regional one but I've accepted I sound perfectly dull. Anyway I am sorry to say that the majority of Americans I hear have a sort of whine to their voices. It's not that bad in the grand scheme of things.
  • There are beautifully spoken Americans and coarse harsh accents just in all languages. I must admit that I find some of the broad Southern accents a little hard on the ear. Mind you - as an Aussie, I hear that our accent grates on many people as well!
  • what kind of american accent are you talking about. standard american, from like ohio and California doesn't sound that much like that, but southern accents have a little more nasal resinaters in them.
  • Well I am an English chick who has moved to Australia, at first i couldn't get over the strength of the aussie accent (you do sound like they do in the movies!!!) and i was like, well we don't have an accent in England! Then I started to hear the English accent. Now I can hear both the accents, and my voice sounds american for some reason!!! I guess them mixed = american :):):)
  • I am Australian I love the deep south American accents When you hear a bad English accent it is terrible but then again im sure each country has both bad and good, Australia certainly does
  • Firstly, you have quite a variety of accents in America, New York (Brooklyn), Boston, North/ South Carolina, Wisconsin, Texas etc etc so it's impossible to say what the American accent is. It is easy to identify someone as being from north America though. I like many of the accents from the U.S
  • Obviously quite difficult to answer this one. Probably a bit like a thick Texan accent sounds to an American. Or try this... "Exzersi-ize jayay. Carmpand intonairzhun ov numbairs. In shoe-airt frazez, tee-een can be thairt ov as a sepairate waired in terms ov inton-naizhion. In lairnger frazez, the numair plus tee-een becooms wun waird. Repee-eet eftar me ..." • Yeah the nasal thing is true.
  • It's true, but it doesn't sound that bad on most people, don't worry ! With some people though, it can really grate on the ears, especially if they don't speak with much expression.
  • As a generalisation I really notice emphasis of the 'ell' like in 'swell'.A long 'ell' or 'll'.
  • North American English is closer to Shakespearean English than British tongue. In England, the educated classes coming from schools such as Harrow, Eton Cambridge and Oxford had a habit of picking up affectations(things that they liked that were not in general circulation) and adopting it as their own. These then became the standard with gentlemen and ladies, in literary circles, in religious circles, in administrative, and government service. A wildfire of sorts!
  • Depends what part of the US... generally though, elongated vowels, yes maybe a wee bit nasal too.
  • MY GOD SOME OF YOU TALK SLOW AND GOD DAMN LOUD.
  • American accents are varied -- as are English accents.
  • For those you sound british accent, would love american accent and for them american accent is tough to get. The vowel sounds of americans and brtishers vary a lot. One interesting thing many americans feel british accent as a sexy one. Further it is difficult to compress the variety of accent around the democratic America in a nut shell as american accent. There are southern, midwest, gereral american, boston accent and so many. Source: http://www.neutralaccent.com
