  • In conversational writing (like on here) I use them a lot. I don't use them much in formal writing.
  • Yes..(I do too!) :)
  • I try to slip them in as often as I can. I think they add style to a sentence. (ºçº)
  • I've just gone past the 60,000 word mark on my first book for children and as an estimate I think my most favoured piece of punctuation is the semi-colon; parentheses (or brackets, as we sometimes call them in Blighty) are among the least common.
  • Haha. Yes. (Quite often ;)
  • Sure I do. I hope to become a regular e.e. cummings. The actual usage of the parentheses - a seemingly simple grammatical choice - actually contributes and moves the writing. I love the concept of poetic devices and the brilliance of employing certain techniques to evoke certain emotions and ideas. I carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart)i am never without it(anywhere i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing,my darling) i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true) and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart) What e.e. does there with grammar and punctuation is brilliant.
  • I do. ((((((Angel Hugs))))))))
  • I use them quite a bit in informal writing, like on AB. However, in something formal and in my usual computer communications I do not.
  • Not often. My "thing" is quotation marks and exclamation points! :) Happy Friday, B! :) ((hugs)) Oh, wait a minute..when I give hugs I use parentheses, don't I? Never mind! :)
  • Nothing out of the "norm", I wouldn't think.
  • In my work I have to use them a lot, but in everyday writing I hardly use them. Best regards.
  • Yes, I use them (quite) frequently.
  • I do that (it gets worse with commas though!)
  • I tend to [but I love using square brackets instead, for some reason].
  • Nah - I'm more of a dash kind of guy :)
  • Yes and no... I have a weakness for square brackets, and I use them in place of parentheses; flagrantly flaunting proper usage in the process [but I just don't care]! :-]
  • not really
  • Sometimes, as in the following sentence. I mentioned this when I was nine point four. If Miss Deighton becomes my 75-star girl (and I am sure she will) chances are I will be calling her 'Cherilyn'.
  • Only to clarify or emphasies part of the sentence.
  • Yup i use them almost constantly.(Except in this case where parentheses might be deemed unnecessary.)
  • In this forum I do. If I was writng text, for another reason, I probably would not use them much.(note use of commas in 2nd sentence)
  • I've stacked parentheses seven deep before (But I don't do that so much any more, it decreases the clarity of my writing [unless I'm not trying to be clear]).
  • No, but, I tend to string too many thoughts together, separating each segment, with the emphasis of a comma, or a semi-colon, or even a colon; not to say that these devices aren't useful in the story line, and the manipulation, in a positive sense, of the reader; but, they can be a distraction, losing my reader in a miasma, of seemingly, disjointed jibberish, and a long forgotten... point.
