Because the monkeys are far, far too far back for us to remember. We didn't suddenly change from monkeys to humans - it took at least 2 million years, probably longer. At each generation, grandparents, parents and children all looked like "us". No-one would ever remember someone who looked "different" enough o be called a monkey. People indistinguishable from moder humans live at least 40,000 hears ago, so there have been over 1,600 generations of people just like us, let alone many thousands of generations of people nearly like us, almost like us, quite like us and so on. Without written records, it is very unlikely that any stories would survive that many generations. Even with some writing, we know relatively little of those even 4,000 years ago.

We've only had since 1859 to think intensively on this concept. That's Darwin's big year. Before that society was heavily Creationist. Great Mother monkey legends started since then and now, just haven't stuck. (heh heh).

Because the evolution of an ape into modern humans happened over millions of years, not even a noticeable change would have happened in anyone's lifetime... ^ Consider this: Do you really 'notice' yourself being taller every day? Or do you only notice it periodically, over a time where you have grown maybe an inch or two? People don't notice themselves being one millimetre higher, they notice a big change, it is the same for Evolution, but the change happens over thousands of years, so no one at the time is capable of actually knowing it is happening, it is only now in retrospect that we can see how we have evolved over such a huge period of time.

You're right. A great mother monkey is far less realistic than a magical an omnipotent super-being who creates the world for no reason, then watches as the people suffer.

Hey, I've got a question: why did God create the universe in seven days? Why didn't he do it five? Or one? Wouldn't that be just as arbitrary? If he's all powerful, why didn't he create it all instantaneously? Why did he put the forbidden tree in the garden of Eden? Why didn't he just save ADam and Eve the trouble and leave it out? Why did he create the snake? If God is all powerful, why does Satan exist? Why does evil exist? Please.

You are equating "the great mother monkey" to a deity that gave us life and that is not *evolution* at all so the question makes no sense.
-
Because creation stories are a set of myths people made up. They don't have to - and usually have no basis in reality.
-
Why don't you rephrase your question as follows: 'If religions were true, why aren't all of our creation stories about DNA and natural selection?'
-
"Great Mother Monkey"? What the hell are you talking about? You think that evolution teaches that there is a "great mother monkey" that gave humans life? I can't even begin to describe how incorrect and ignorant that is.

1) Evolution is a fact. There is no question that can start with "If evolution were true..." because it *is* true. Do your homework. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_as_theory_and_fact http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creation-evolution_controversy 2) Evolution is science. Our creation stories are old myths which don't have to do with science or any fact whatsoever. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creation_myth 3) Of course, now that you now about evolution, you could rewrite your creation stories to make them follow the facts.
