What that means is that I don't see any reason to adopt viewpoints about things for which I have no experience or evidence. We humans love to eliminate uncertainty and doubt from our lives, that makes us feel like we're in control. But really, we'd be better off just leaving the hole there and continuing to observe, experiment, and inquire into the matter. In a non-religious way yes. I believe that the atoms in my body were once part of stars (that is how heavy elements like carbon are made). I also believe that when I die my body will break down, and the proteins, sugars, fat (hopefully not too much of that!) and individual atoms will move on to other forms. Some may sit in soil, others in bacteria, maybe a few in the bodies of animals, some gases in the atmosphere, and maybe some day a few may make it back to a star from where they came. This for me is a more wonderous and satisfying idea than any afterlife or soul-reincarnation. Not really. It's a cool idea, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. In my mind, in order for reincarnation to occur, there would have to be a finite number of beings and they each experience an infinite number of lives through the bodies of various organisms. In other words, they change in form but are never destroyed. But then wouldn't it have to be true that at any given moment, there are the same number of organisms alive on the planet, since there are only a limited number of beings which cannot be created or destroyed? Some people believe that reincarnation continues until a being has reached some state of enlightenment or nirvana through good works in his or her many lifetimes. I guess that takes care of the conservation of beings question, but I still don't really buy it, because that would imply the existence of some moral absolutism. I've believed in reincarnation since around the age of 14 and it was based on nothing more than an internal instinct and the sense it made to me. I was raised Catholic and still consider myself stongly Christian-spiritual, but I've opened my belief system to include what I consider an infinite creative flow that constantly nourishes the universe. As to the finite number of souls/so how is the population growing question, I'd suggest that there are answers out there that none of us have found yet. Maybe we're all just sparks of a greater light, rearranged, broken down and built back up over and over. Maybe, just as atoms and molecules come together and move on to make up other matter, the light inside us ir reararnged over and over again. I'd like to think so. In science, a rule states that matter can neither be created nor destoyed. I believe that the atoms of Moses still exist on this planet. So does Jesus. The bonds that held their atoms together have merely seperated. Someday they may come together randomly again. This is why you can remember parts of past lives. I've seen on the history channel and stuff of 4 & 5 year olds saying their name was something else and they died a certain way when researched it was found exactly the ways these kids told it. I had a lot of dreams when I was 5 years old that I was in the backseat and I go off a bridge over and over again, happened almost every night. I remember crying as a kid, 5, 9, when I was going on a class trip and we went over a high bridge. A strong fear feels like my heart is jumping out of my chest and tears come to my eyes. When I got my drivers license, I refused to drive over ANY bridge, I'm getting better with my husbands help, I can't have anyone talking to me and I have to take a deep breath and focus 100%. I don't know if it's how I died or how I will die but with everything I've watched I believe I died when I was 5 in my past life going over a bridge with my parents. It breaks my heart when I hear others have passed that way, I feel an unknown relation.

No. We humans do not want to die, so some of us have created a vehicle designed for eternal life....Reincarnation. We will return to this Planet once we die...isn't that great!

Not only is rebirth (or reincarnation) a real phenomenon but a must in a system of checks and balances, otherwise those that have murdered a million in this life will get off scot free after he dies. Sure you might say that he will stay in hell forever but that is impractically cruel and does not offer the possibility of ever being released (delivered) from, for lack of a good modern analogy, the "matrix" and so would not likely to be the system that is self-regulating. Rebirth is a self-regulating, natural process. When those that are on their last breath still harbor deep rooted vengeful thoughts about the killer, murderer, torturer and because of such lingering thoughts and also the roots of desires and aversions of the six senses that came with the lingering notion of the self, that soul or consciousness will be reborn in some future times and if conditions are right, he will meet the killer in the future life again. This time around on first glance at the killer, this person would have an unexplainable rush of anger seemingly stemmed from no where. This is the stored emotional memory from the last breath of the victim before he died in the previous life. Now he has a choice, either to control his anger and let go of it so that the search for vengence will terminate in this life time or if he can't control it, he might end up killing the one who was his killer in the previous lives and the cycle of revenge will continue life after life. Sentient beings provide the actions and thoughts, and karma provides the framework (based on those actions and thoughts) for their future lives. Going from one life time to the next could probably be easier to understand if we think of playing a computer game where you finish one stage of the game and so enters the next stage with new challenges and new world systems but you carry your points from the previous stage with you (ie, the karmic results of the past). In this case going from one life to the next you carry all the good, bad and neutral karma with you as it requires this massive data to reconstruct the reality in your next life. Do you think all the animals that have been raised as livestocks and forced to die for people to eat will die and turn to just a memory? No. Just because they can't fight against you does not mean they are willing to die for your dinner plate. Every pound of flesh forcefully taken from them, the person that ate their flesh will in some future life time have to pay them back with his own flesh when the conditions ripens. Karma does not miscalculate even a single grain of dust let alone the forceful taking of another's flesh. So, this is what the purpose of reincarnation is for and is to do with all the checks and balances of all thoughts and sensation of every living beings in relation to one another at every moment in time. Like the law of conservation of mass-energy in physics E=mC^2, every actions, every thoughts and every sensation is also conserved and recycled to the next life just like water itself. As a poor anology but this all I could think of at this time, is to take a single water molecule for instance. Do you realise that this single water molecule among all the others that you have drank into your body today had already passed through the guts of some dinosaurs, then ended up in some insects........ eventually through countless eons passed through your great great...... .......great grandparents before it finally reached your body. This water molecule will stay in your body and becomes part of what you define yourself to be. After that it will move on and ends up inside the body of some other animals and become a part of what that animal is.

People who believe in re-incarcarnation have a unreasonable fear of death. I think its stupid to be living this life waiting for the next. Better to commit to this life and believe you have one life to live - so live it right this time - there will be no second chances.

I am an atheist. That being said, I really do WISH something like reincarnation existed. I think it would make things more interesting. However what I wish was true and what I logically deduce to be true are different things. I have read a few books on reincarnation just because the idea is interesting to me.
